GTB Lab's groundbreaking work is bringing solutions for circular, reversible buildings to life in the Netherlands.
This work was presented in a television series about sustainable buildings and "Building the Future," which aired on Dutch television.
Imagine a place where things are constantly changing without anything being destroyed or wasted. In this place, "waste is seen as a design error" (Elma Durmisevic, founder of GTB Lab). This space is the Green Transformable Building Lab (GTB Lab), an EU laboratory for circular buildings in the Netherlands.
The GTB Lab unites the public and private sectors to develop new processes and building concepts for a circular world. It does so by demonstrating best practices and measuring the environmental and economic impacts of these new concepts.
Dr. Elma Durmisevic, the lab's founder and architect, envisioned a laboratory of transformation, a dynamic space and structure that illustrates the design principles, construction solutions, and measurable performance indicators of circular buildings.
These indicators consider how often materials can be reused and the benefits this has on the environment and economy. More importantly, they consider how building spaces can be reused.
GTB Lab developments are boosting regional transitions toward circular buildings. The lab supports public authorities in standardizing circularity and architects in designing with checklists. GTB Lab also supports industry in developing circular methods, transforming production processes, reversing logistics, and inventing new financial models.
